10 Weekly Obsessions (5/20-5/27)

Last week, a weekly list of things I loved that week seemed like a great idea. It would be, if I had the time for both weekly obsessions and other topics. However, being that I am a working girl, I have decided to do 10 MONTHLY obsessions instead, starting in June. BUT being that it's still May, there's still time for one more:

10 Weekly Obsessions (5/20-5/27)

10. Slurpees

My boyfriend and I live in a pretty convenient location, so we can pretty much walk to anything good in DC. Last week, we may have taken this a little too far, as we decided to shop, find hidden gems, AND hunt down the MLK memorial, which all ended up being in different neighborhoods. Needless to say, not only were we exhausted, we were also PARCHED. I had decided to wait to get home to quench my thirst until...we walked by a 7-Eleven with a sign in the front advertising Slurpees for 49 cents. Mind you, I didn't even notice the sale at first, all I saw was a picture of a glorious Slurpee, which I hadn't had since sophomore year of college! FOUR years ago! As I suspected, my wild cherry Fanta mixed with Sprite Zero slurpee was PERFECT for the warm day, and I've been craving another one ever since.

9. Kit Kats

I have a massive sweet tooth. As long as it's sweet, I'll eat it. I have favorite candy bars (potential blog entry?), but I also go through phases with certain ones. Last week, it was Kit Kat bars. Everywhere I went, the red wrapper would tantalize me. I also embarrassingly just loved asking my boyfriend, "Would you like me to break you off a piece of my Kit Kat bar?"

8. Ben & Jerry's piña colada

I love Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Their fun flavors never disappoint, and this was no exception. My boyfriend was the one who actually picked this one up (if he wrote a weekly obsessions blog, pineapples would be #1 on his list), but I made sure to steal a spoonful, and it was well worth it. Coconut ice cream with pineapple chunks...simple enough, and a perfect combination. Unfortunately, it's limited edition.

7. Maxi dresses

As a petite girl (5'2"! And a half!), I thought maxi dresses were just not for me. Then, I was watching Fashion Star, and I had an epiphany. NICOLE RICHIE IS THE QUEEN OF MAXI DRESSES! She's 5'0"! I then realized I could pull it off, so long as I was very selective and made sure what I picked didn't overwhelm my tiny figure. So far, I have done very well with these two cuties:

6. Prissy from Gone with the Wind

I watched Gone with the Wind this past Saturday for the 10th time, literally (my boyfriend pointed out that that's almost a full work week -_-). I think Scarlett O'Hara is a GODDESS, so she usually distracts me the entire film. For some reason, although I have always enjoyed Prissy's character, I REALLY enjoyed it this time around. She is infuriating, claiming she's delivered a million babies, then admitting she 'don't know nothin' bout birthin' babies!' when the moment of truth finally comes, THEN claiming SHE delivered the baby with "a little" help from Scarlett. Yet she's still likable! I don't know if it's her ridiculous voice, or the fact that her naivete is almost endearing, but she really stands out from the secondary characters...although she seems to disappear later on in the film without any explanation :(

5. Lawry's marinades

What would I do without you, Lawry's marinades? So, my boyfriend and I like to avoid fattening drunk munchies by eating meat instead. I know it may sound weird, but nothing is faster-yet-still-satisfying than pan frying some pork chops and eating away...not the HEALTHIEST meal, but better than our alternative, pizza slices. The other day, we drunkenly decided that we wanted some type of dip for our pork chops, so we made rookie drinking error #9...we went to the grocery store drunk. Typically, this would be bad news, but this ended up being a productive shopping trip, as we found these Lawry's 30-minute marinades (buy 2, get 3 free, mind you) while searching for our dipping sauce. I have a weird work schedule, so I work until 8:00pm most days, and the LAST thing I want to do is make some complicated meal when I come home, but I refuse to eat out all the time. These things have literally been a lifesaver. Just marinade 30 minutes, make my side dish in the meantime, cook it all, and dinner is done in less than an hour!

4. Häagen-Dazs coconut macaroon

I love Häagen-Dazs ice cream. It has NEVER let me down. I love coconut macaroons. They have NEVER let me down. Combining the two ended up being some of the best ice cream I've ever had. The little chunks of coconut macaroons in the coconut ice cream were PERFECT, sometimes soft and chewy and sometimes hard and crispy. It's too bad that it's also limited edition, as this is one of the best ice cream flavors I've had in a while.

3. Miss Pixie's

As previously mentioned, my boyfriend and I went on a hunt for hidden gems around DC, and this was my favorite. The first thing you notice when you walk by Miss Pixie's is the bright pink paint on its exterior. I consider myself to be a somewhat eclectic person, and this was the vibe I instantly got from this vintage furniture store. This place had EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING. Playboy magazines from the 70's, old glass milk jugs, used baseballs, reasonably priced furniture, an old typewriter, tea sets...I could go on and on. This place is only a few blocks from my apartment, so I'm sure I'll be a regular in no time.

2. High-Low skirts

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. When I saw these on the hanger, I had a bit of a 'wtf is that?' reaction, so I tried one on (the black one) out of curiosity, and I fell in love. I don't typically like long skirts, but I love the way they flow, and these are the perfect compromise. The black one is made of a very light material, so no breeze is necessary, it just flows behind me when I walk. The lime green isn't AS flowy, but is a gorgeous summery color, and is very lightweight. I am dying to wear them!

1. MLK Memorial

Martin Luther King, Jr. is EASILY my favorite historical figure, so I was excited to see this landmark. Surprisingly, this memorial is fairly new, and let me tell you, finding the MLK statue was no easy feat. For whatever reason, my boyfriend's GPS system led us about 15 minutes away from the memorial site, and on our attempt to make it back to the right area, we ran across a closed road, and even when we made it to the area, we  could see no indication of where it was. Frustrated, we gave up, and resumed our mission the next day on  foot. The memorial is definitely not as visible (AKA not as easy to find) as the Washington Monument or the Lincoln Memorial, but it was definitely worth the extra effort. The statue itself is impressive, but the memorial is kicked up a notch by two large walls with inspirational MLK quotes carved into them. The memorial overlooks the Tidal Basin, the Jefferson Memorial and, when in season, the cherry blossoms surrounding the area, making it also very well placed (once you find it).
