10 Weekly Obsessions (5/20-5/27)

Last week, a weekly list of things I loved that week seemed like a great idea. It would be, if I had the time for both weekly obsessions and other topics. However, being that I am a working girl, I have decided to do 10 MONTHLY obsessions instead, starting in June. BUT being that it's still May, there's still time for one more:

10 Weekly Obsessions (5/20-5/27)

10. Slurpees

My boyfriend and I live in a pretty convenient location, so we can pretty much walk to anything good in DC. Last week, we may have taken this a little too far, as we decided to shop, find hidden gems, AND hunt down the MLK memorial, which all ended up being in different neighborhoods. Needless to say, not only were we exhausted, we were also PARCHED. I had decided to wait to get home to quench my thirst until...we walked by a 7-Eleven with a sign in the front advertising Slurpees for 49 cents. Mind you, I didn't even notice the sale at first, all I saw was a picture of a glorious Slurpee, which I hadn't had since sophomore year of college! FOUR years ago! As I suspected, my wild cherry Fanta mixed with Sprite Zero slurpee was PERFECT for the warm day, and I've been craving another one ever since.

9. Kit Kats

I have a massive sweet tooth. As long as it's sweet, I'll eat it. I have favorite candy bars (potential blog entry?), but I also go through phases with certain ones. Last week, it was Kit Kat bars. Everywhere I went, the red wrapper would tantalize me. I also embarrassingly just loved asking my boyfriend, "Would you like me to break you off a piece of my Kit Kat bar?"

8. Ben & Jerry's piña colada

I love Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Their fun flavors never disappoint, and this was no exception. My boyfriend was the one who actually picked this one up (if he wrote a weekly obsessions blog, pineapples would be #1 on his list), but I made sure to steal a spoonful, and it was well worth it. Coconut ice cream with pineapple chunks...simple enough, and a perfect combination. Unfortunately, it's limited edition.

7. Maxi dresses

As a petite girl (5'2"! And a half!), I thought maxi dresses were just not for me. Then, I was watching Fashion Star, and I had an epiphany. NICOLE RICHIE IS THE QUEEN OF MAXI DRESSES! She's 5'0"! I then realized I could pull it off, so long as I was very selective and made sure what I picked didn't overwhelm my tiny figure. So far, I have done very well with these two cuties:

6. Prissy from Gone with the Wind

I watched Gone with the Wind this past Saturday for the 10th time, literally (my boyfriend pointed out that that's almost a full work week -_-). I think Scarlett O'Hara is a GODDESS, so she usually distracts me the entire film. For some reason, although I have always enjoyed Prissy's character, I REALLY enjoyed it this time around. She is infuriating, claiming she's delivered a million babies, then admitting she 'don't know nothin' bout birthin' babies!' when the moment of truth finally comes, THEN claiming SHE delivered the baby with "a little" help from Scarlett. Yet she's still likable! I don't know if it's her ridiculous voice, or the fact that her naivete is almost endearing, but she really stands out from the secondary characters...although she seems to disappear later on in the film without any explanation :(

5. Lawry's marinades

What would I do without you, Lawry's marinades? So, my boyfriend and I like to avoid fattening drunk munchies by eating meat instead. I know it may sound weird, but nothing is faster-yet-still-satisfying than pan frying some pork chops and eating away...not the HEALTHIEST meal, but better than our alternative, pizza slices. The other day, we drunkenly decided that we wanted some type of dip for our pork chops, so we made rookie drinking error #9...we went to the grocery store drunk. Typically, this would be bad news, but this ended up being a productive shopping trip, as we found these Lawry's 30-minute marinades (buy 2, get 3 free, mind you) while searching for our dipping sauce. I have a weird work schedule, so I work until 8:00pm most days, and the LAST thing I want to do is make some complicated meal when I come home, but I refuse to eat out all the time. These things have literally been a lifesaver. Just marinade 30 minutes, make my side dish in the meantime, cook it all, and dinner is done in less than an hour!

4. Häagen-Dazs coconut macaroon

I love Häagen-Dazs ice cream. It has NEVER let me down. I love coconut macaroons. They have NEVER let me down. Combining the two ended up being some of the best ice cream I've ever had. The little chunks of coconut macaroons in the coconut ice cream were PERFECT, sometimes soft and chewy and sometimes hard and crispy. It's too bad that it's also limited edition, as this is one of the best ice cream flavors I've had in a while.

3. Miss Pixie's

As previously mentioned, my boyfriend and I went on a hunt for hidden gems around DC, and this was my favorite. The first thing you notice when you walk by Miss Pixie's is the bright pink paint on its exterior. I consider myself to be a somewhat eclectic person, and this was the vibe I instantly got from this vintage furniture store. This place had EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING. Playboy magazines from the 70's, old glass milk jugs, used baseballs, reasonably priced furniture, an old typewriter, tea sets...I could go on and on. This place is only a few blocks from my apartment, so I'm sure I'll be a regular in no time.

2. High-Low skirts

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. When I saw these on the hanger, I had a bit of a 'wtf is that?' reaction, so I tried one on (the black one) out of curiosity, and I fell in love. I don't typically like long skirts, but I love the way they flow, and these are the perfect compromise. The black one is made of a very light material, so no breeze is necessary, it just flows behind me when I walk. The lime green isn't AS flowy, but is a gorgeous summery color, and is very lightweight. I am dying to wear them!

1. MLK Memorial

Martin Luther King, Jr. is EASILY my favorite historical figure, so I was excited to see this landmark. Surprisingly, this memorial is fairly new, and let me tell you, finding the MLK statue was no easy feat. For whatever reason, my boyfriend's GPS system led us about 15 minutes away from the memorial site, and on our attempt to make it back to the right area, we ran across a closed road, and even when we made it to the area, we  could see no indication of where it was. Frustrated, we gave up, and resumed our mission the next day on  foot. The memorial is definitely not as visible (AKA not as easy to find) as the Washington Monument or the Lincoln Memorial, but it was definitely worth the extra effort. The statue itself is impressive, but the memorial is kicked up a notch by two large walls with inspirational MLK quotes carved into them. The memorial overlooks the Tidal Basin, the Jefferson Memorial and, when in season, the cherry blossoms surrounding the area, making it also very well placed (once you find it).

10 Weekly Obsessions (5/13-5/19)

I am determined to blog more. I originally said I started this blog because I wanted to write more but...that only works if I actually write more. So to ensure that I'm keeping up with this, I found a way to make sure I write at least once a week with my:

10 Weekly Obsessions (5/13-5/19)

10. These sunglasses

MARC BY MARC JACOBS 54mm Retro Sunglasses in transparent coral

So I’m obsessed with these sunglasses. They are BEAUTIFUL. I’ve always hated sunglasses because I don’t think they look good on me, not to mention I think eye contact is a MUST when talking to people, so obviously I would prefer if people could actually see my eyes. These reasons are the only thing holding me back from buying these beauties, but I don’t know how much longer I can resist!

9. Amy’s organic pesto tortellini

This stuff is so so so so good. I really only bought it because it was on sale, and I was curious about whether or not an organic frozen meal would taste any better than a regular one. Well, either organic makes all the difference or I just got lucky and picked the right meal, because this was delicious! It DOES have a strong taste of basil so I wouldn’t recommend it if that’s an issue, and I did add quite a bit of Parmesan cheese to it because who DOESN’T add extra cheese to anything they can? It’s a bit pricy, as I paid $5 for it and that was the sale price, I think the original price is $7…for a frozen meal? I will definitely pick up some more though…while they’re on sale.

8. CoronaRitas

I am thoroughly ashamed in admitting this, but I have wanted one of these ever since seeing Snooki downing one on the Jersey Shore. When my boyfriend text me Sunday evening asking me to meet him and a friend for a Sunday happy hour nearby, I couldn’t say no. When I walked in, there he was, looking drunk and happy along with our friend, and they credited the CoronaRitas for their inebriated state. I’m not a fan of margaritas OR Coronas, but this was just fun to drink and definitely got the job done, so I’m sure I’ll be making more appearances at this Sunday happy hour in the near future.

7. Eggs and hot sauce

I don’t know how it happened. I would judge my boyfriend because he puts hot sauce on EVERYTHING. Pizza, green beans, any type of meat, mac and cheese, and ALL of my cooking (which I would take as a sign that he didn’t like my cooking, but I have  just come to accept that he just loves hot sauce), but then I got curious, so I started to give hot sauce a chance. Hot sauce and green beans were a no-go, but hot sauce and pizza? Success! Then, I put it on my eggs…and didn’t love it. Then, I put it on my eggs again…and I liked it. Then, I put it on my eggs again…and I ended up eating eggs and hot sauce all week. I know my boyfriend is secretly basking in this ‘I-told-you-so’ moment.

6. My new bar cart

AHHHHH isn’t it beautiful?? My boyfriend and I have been looking for ways to make our apartment perfect for us, so we like to have fun things in it. This bar cart is the latest addition to that, since we, um, certainly enjoy our cocktails and we want to fill our apartment with things we love. Obviously, we now have to buy alcohol so that it’s stocked, but that’s the fun part!

5. My new dress:
Beautiful!

4. Music from The Great Gatsby

For over a decade, the Cruel Intentions soundtrack has been my favorite movie soundtrack of all time. For the first time ever, it’s facing some competition. I LOVED the music from this movie. Two of my favorites:

$100 Bill, Jay-Z

This quirky version of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love by Emeli Sande.

3. My red Converse

Let me tell you something about my red Converse. I ADORE THESE SHOES. My red Converse are my babies. Unfortunately, I drunkenly lost my original pair. Yes, I lost the pair of shoes I was wearing while drunk. I would drop a ‘don’t ask,’ but I don’t remember how it happened so I wouldn’t be able to answer anyway. Obviously, being that I love these shoes, I HAD to re-order them the first chance I got, which was a complete pain in the ass. Converse run big, so I am a men’s size 3, women’s size 5, which is the 22cm shoe (this will become relevant in a few sentences) which is unavailable EVERYWHERE. Fortunately, my boyfriend came to the rescue as he always does and found out that I could get a grade school boys’ size 4, also 22cm. So I order them, shouldn’t be a problem right? Nope! Package comes, they sent me a MEN’S size 4, 23cm. Obviously, I call to resolve this, they tell me they’ll send me another pair, which comes the next day…and it’s ANOTHER pair of men’s size 4, 23cm!!! At this point, I am livid, so I call again, and this time around, they claim that the men’s and boys’ size 4 shoes are the same, even though it CLEARLY says on the website that one is a 22cm and the other a 23cm!! Fortunately, despite the incredibly frustrating experience, all was well at the end of the day, when the customer service representative realized I could just order the shoe in a little kid’s size, which also saved me 25 dollars! So now I have my beloved pair of shoes, which are TINY (I am a firm believer that Converse look better when they’re small)…and I also have 2 pairs of men’s size 4 which I have to ship back -_-

2. The Great Gatsby

I have no complaints about this movie. Unlike many (what I believe to be foolish) people, I read the novel, but I didn’t bring it into the movie theater with me. The novel is a CLASSIC, I don’t think it would be possible to make a movie that would live up to that. Therefore, when I went to see Gatsby, I had no ludicrous expectations of how well it would honor the novel, which I think was a major reason why I enjoyed it so much. I thought the film was artistic, quirky, dramatic, funny AND sad all at once, and definitely one of the most enjoyable movie-going experiences I have had in some time.

1. Young and Beautiful

I know, I know. Technically this should be under #4, but this song is a standout. Lana Del Rey is my favorite singer, so when I heard she was doing a song for Gatsby I was the happiest girl alive. Then I heard the song…and orgasmed. THIS SONG IS FANTASTIC. I had already fallen in love with it before seeing Gatsby, but now it’s officially an obsession. I have been playing it NONSTOP. Even my boyfriend declared it his favorite Lana song (dethroning Ride).
